App #38: Fractions+ [Promo Codes Available]

From Omega Labs, the same developers who brought you Mathtopia+, come another brand new math app called Fractions+ ($.99, click here for the developer website). It contains the same great “Bejeweled” type game-play, but this time incorporates fractions. Fractions+ will keep teachers, parents and kids excited about reviewing math fractions, a concept that most definitely is more advanced than the standard four math operations. Fractions+ is a universal app and works great on iPads, iPhones and iPod touch.

As described by the developers, Fractions+ “develops recognition of everyday fractions: halves, fourths, thirds, fifths, sixths, eighths and tenths, and their equivalents.” Who would have thought fractions would be this fun? I played this game for over half an hour on two occasions!

Earn matches by pairing up the solutions with the fraction. Earn prizes such as stars and trophies as you improve!
Like Mathtopia+, when you make an error, that space is locked, resulting in more difficult gameplay. Players will try to make the least amount of mistakes as possible!

Conclusion:

For less than $1, this is a great app for students and teachers. Teachers will be able to use it both in a 1:1 iPad classroom (where students can perhaps pair up and play against each other) and a single iPad classroom (where a teacher can project it for the whole class to take turns playing in groups.) There is a neat feature not found in other swapping games: Multi-swap. Using multiple fingers, one can speed up the swapping process to finish rounds quicker.

While fractions themselves can be a challenge to learn as a young student, this app is guaranteed to make the learning process more fun and a little more interesting. Your students and kids will love this app, find it engaging and addictive, and (hopefully) not want to put it down. Little do they know that they are learning math while enjoying the games aspect of Fractions+. This app is not just for students: It is great for adults to review what they learned in math class those many years ago. Highly recommended for everyone!
